[Covington, LA, 5/11/13] The morning of Saturday, May 11th, roughly 630 student athletes came through the doors of Fairway Medical Surgical Hospital and received free sports physicals for the 2013-2014 school year. These students came from twenty-eight different schools throughout our community. The state of Louisiana requires all high school athletes to have a sports physical prior to athletic participation, so the team at Fairway Medical came together six years ago to create their annual Sports Medicine Free Physical Day event.
Fairway Medical Sports Medicine Coordinator, Gary Lewis, works closely with many local schools year-round, but all student athletes in our community were invited to participate in the free physical day.
All participants were given an extensive physical assessment by our professional volunteers. In addition, they were offered free echocardiogram screenings, compliments of Dr. Frank Voelker and Dr. Bruce Ennis from Tchefuncte Cardiovascular Associates.
This event is made possible by more than 70 volunteers, including Fairway Medical employees, family and friends, athletic trainers, physical therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners and physicians throughout the community. Fairway Medical would like to thank all the volunteers for their time, as well as the schools who have chosen Fairway Medical to be the provider of physical screenings for the majority of their student athletes.
