The morning of Saturday, May 19th, roughly 750 student athletes came through the doors of Fairway Medical Surgical Hospital and received free sports physicals for the 2012-2013 school year. These students came from thirty-six schools throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. The state of Louisiana requires all high school athletes to have a sports physical prior to athletic participation, so the team at Fairway Medical came together five years ago to create their annual Sports Medicine Free Physical Day event.
Fairway Medical Sports Medicine Coordinator, Gary Lewis, works closely with many local schools year-round, but all student athletes in our community were invited to participate in the free physical day. "Fairway is pleased to offer this service to the student athletes in our community,” said Lewis. "Every year we strive to improve the event to better meet the needs of our students, their parents, our local schools and our physicians. We were seeing an average of 400 athletes during the first several years of this event. Our program is constantly expanding and this year we saw roughly 750 athletes, making this the largest Physical Day to date!”
Students began arriving at the hospital as early as 6:30a.m., with their parents, friends, some even in school buses full of their teammates. The doors opened at 8:00am and the 750 students passed through the halls of Fairway Medical until 11:30am. All student athletes were given an extensive physical assessment by our professional volunteers. In addition, they were offered free echocardiogram screenings, compliments of Dr. Frank Voelker and Dr. Bruce Ennis from Tchefuncte Cardiovascular Associates.
This event is made possible by more than 75 volunteers, including Fairway Medical employees, family and friends, athletic trainers, physical therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners and physicians throughout the community. Fairway Medical would like to thank all the volunteers for their time, as well as the schools who have chosen Fairway Medical to be the provider of physical screenings for the majority of their student athletes.
